BACK PAIN? Myth # 13
Back pain or Sciatica is usually caused by a bulging disc.
Do you suffer from back pain and/or sciatica? Did you know that the least common cause of back pain/sciatica is related to an intervertebral disc dysfunction such as a bulge, herniation, or rupture. Even in the presence of a bulge, etc. on MRI, research has shown that such a dysfunction may not be the cause of the person’s pain. In fact, research has revealed that many individuals have some sort of disc dysfunction but are experiencing no pain!
More often than not, back pain and/or sciatica – which simply describes a referral pattern of pain and does not explain the cause of pain (thus, is more of a DESCRIPTOR of pain vs a true “diagnosis”) – is caused by muscular tightness, joint stiffness, or a combination of the two. Oftentimes, the tightness may be present in the hip musculature creating increased stress on the lower back or the sciatic nerve.
